A Walk From the House

We recently went for a walk from the house. There is a relatively unmarked trail close by that goes through salt marshes, along a road along the Neponset River, under the Red Line, Commuter Rail tracks and car bridge, around the Best Western Adams Inn and back down Hancock St/3A. Here are some pics and observations from our walk.

The corner of Saratoga Street and Airport Rd. and the beginning of the trail.

The salt marshes and view of Boston in the far background, and the development Marina Bay in the close background. It's unfortunate that the beauty of this view ends with huge condominiums.

It was partially a native/invasives plant walk, or a fall berry walk
...Elaeagnus umbellata, Autumn Olive

A colorful crabapple

Celastrus orbiculatus, Chinese Bittersweet

Rhamnus cathartica, Common Buckthorn

We passed by Naval Terrace

and through salt marshes

unfortunately, someone who frequents this trail with their dog pick up after their dog and then tosses the baggies off the trail...come fall, all is revealed...

More pretty invasives....Polygonum cuspidatum, Japanese Knotweed

...paired with multiflora rose hips

the view from Commander Shea Blvd.

Boston in the background...

Parking lot and condos on Commander Shea Blvd. great view for them, besides the parking lot in the foreground...

staghorn sumac with wee red line train going over the bridge in the background

by the entrance to the continuation of the trail...

a fruiting pear tree

spent milkweed

tim and the inbound train

milkweed, marsh, and marina bay

debris under the tracks

more beautiful invasive japanese knotweed

poison ivy? egads!

the red line and commuter rail tracks. note the sediment filtering hay bales in the foreground.

on the other side of the train tracks is this lone condo building which seems quite nice, has nice views, but is lacking in the landscape department...this piece of lawn, right on the river, is left as an unkempt dogpark.

it even has an old pier

definitely seems like a place with potential

and hardly any graffiti! shocking!

where the lawn begins...

ooh pedestrian access! this goes over the car bridge over the Neponset

the Adam's Inn, with seasonal pool.

a clear path to a pavilion. Pope John Paul II Park across the river.

phragmites, the lovely, very invasive, common reed.

headed back into town, up hancock. this house is sadly surrounded by new development. seems like a last man standing in this neighborhood.

this time we go over the red line

and on our way back to the house, a PVC pipe man from Halloween.
